PGT team members work in conjunction with the company’s MITER Foundation to serve communities impacted by hurricanes, including their home region of Sarasota County, FL, following 2024’s Hurricane Milton
Among the tips offered are:
- Inspect the roof for loose shingles and damaged tiles, as well as other spots that may allow water to enter during a storm.
- Reinforce garage doors, which can be vulnerable to strong winds.
- Protect windows and doors from flying debris. If possible, install storm shutters or impact-resistant windows and doors.
- Trim trees and shrubs that can become dangerous flying debris.
- Test or purchase a generator to ensure you have temporary backup power.
“We realize that contractors and dealers are homeowners’ most trusted partners when it comes to ensuring against the devastating effects of hurricane damage,” said Attila Vamos, director of product engineering at PGT. “We designed this guide as a way to educate customers by supporting them throughout the construction planning and material selection process.” Vamos recently appeared on FOX Weather for a segment discussing the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, offering tips to prevent window and door breakage or roof tear-offs.
Vamos noted that building codes have become stricter in recent years, with state-level building inspectors touring storm-damaged areas to update codes. He added that PGT engineers also often go out after storms to assess damage as part of the company’s efforts to develop advanced impact-resistant glass. This technology translates into products such as PGT WinGuard windows and doors, which are certified to the most stringent hurricane-protection standards.
The guide includes information on hurricanes and severe storms, including categories of storms, types of damage caused at various wind speeds, recommendations for fortifying the home against storms, tips for personal safety during storms, and how to assess structural damage after. There’s also a chart that provides a simple visual comparison of different products designed to secure the home, including impact windows, shutters, and panels.
The better educated the contractor, the better he or she can guide product selection and applications. Pros can download the guide for free to learn more and share it with customers during storm-related project planning, or refer them to the PGT Hurricane Guide page.
